Phone charging habits that actually matter (and the ones that don't)

Most battery advice online is inherited from a chemistry that stopped shipping in phones two decades ago. Here is what the people who make the batteries actually document — and the one factor that does more damage than every charging habit combined.

Ask ten people how to look after a phone battery and you will get ten confident answers, most of which describe nickel-cadmium cells from the 1990s. Lithium-ion behaves differently, and the two companies with the most data about it — Apple and Google — publish quite specific guidance that almost nobody reads.

Strip it down and there are three things that measurably age a battery: how many cycles it has been through, how much time it spends sitting at a very high state of charge, and heat. The third one dwarfs the other two.

The short answer

What a charge cycle actually is

A charge cycle is not a plug-in. It is the cumulative use of 100 % of the battery's capacity, however it accumulates. Draining from 100 % to 50 % on Monday and doing the same on Tuesday is one cycle, not two. This is why the cycle count in your settings rises far more slowly than the number of times you have charged.

That doubling is the most consequential battery change of recent years and it went almost unremarked. For a typical user who accumulates a cycle every day and a half, 500 cycles is roughly two years and 1000 is roughly four.

The 80 % limit, and when it is worth using

Both platforms now let you cap charging. On iPhone 15 and later there is a Charge Limit setting offering 80 % to 100 % in 5 % steps. Pixel phones from the 6a onwards have an 80 % limit too. The chemistry behind it is sound: a lithium-ion cell held at a high state of charge ages faster than one kept in the middle of its range.

But the trade-off is real and rarely stated. Capping at 80 % gives you 80 % of a battery every day, so if you were finishing the day at 15 %, you will now be finishing it flat — and charging more often, which means more cycles. The setting helps people with charge left over. It hurts people who do not have any.

Overnight charging

The old worry — that a phone keeps pushing current into a full battery all night — has not been true for years. Apple's guidance notes the device stops charging when full and resumes if the level drops below 95 %. What remains is the milder concern of time spent at 100 %, and both platforms handle that automatically.

Apple's Optimized Battery Charging holds at 80 % and finishes the charge close to when you normally wake. It needs to learn first: the feature requires around 14 days of pattern and at least nine charges of five hours or more at the same location before it activates. Google's Adaptive Charging works the same way, learning over about two weeks and completing the charge roughly an hour before you usually unplug.

Why it stopped working when you moved

Both features are location- and routine-aware. Change house, change shift pattern, or start charging in a new room, and there is a re-learning period during which your phone will simply charge straight to full.

Heat: the one that matters

Everything above is optimisation at the margins. Heat is the factor that shortens a battery's usable life in ways no charging habit compensates for.

Apple publishes the numbers plainly. The intended ambient operating range for an iPhone is 0 °C to 35 °C, and storage between −20 °C and 45 °C. It recommends keeping the device between roughly 16 °C and 22 °C, and warns that exposure above 35 °C while in use or charging can permanently reduce battery capacity. Not temporarily — the capacity does not come back when the phone cools.

Cold is uncomfortable but forgiving; the phone slows down and then recovers. Heat is the one that takes something away and does not give it back.

In everyday terms that means: do not leave a phone on a car dashboard, do not charge it under a pillow or between sofa cushions, take the thick case off if the phone gets hot while fast charging, and treat a phone that is warm after a long navigation session in the sun as a phone that has just paid a small permanent cost.

Google's Pixel phones now intervene on this directly. Battery Health Assistance limits charging to around 70–80 % when it detects conditions known to be damaging — continuous charging for hours at high temperature, or continuous charging for several days. It is doing exactly what the physics recommends, without asking.

Why your phone insists on a full charge sometimes

If you use a charge cap, you may notice the phone occasionally ignoring it and going to 100 %. Nothing is broken. A battery's state-of-charge reading is an estimate derived from voltage and current, and it drifts if the cell never reaches a known reference point. Charging fully re-anchors the estimate.

Apple says iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 % to maintain accurate state-of-charge estimates. Google is more specific: with the 80 % limit active, a Pixel still needs a full charge on every tenth cycle for the same reason. Let it happen — the alternative is a battery percentage that lies to you.

A routine that works

  1. Leave the automatic optimisation on — Optimized Battery Charging or Adaptive Charging. It is the highest-value setting and it costs you nothing.
  2. Add a charge cap only if you end most days above 40 %. Otherwise you are trading one form of wear for another.
  3. Keep it cool while charging. Off the bed, out of the bag, out of direct sun, and out of a thick case if it is warm to the touch.
  4. Charge overnight if that suits you. The phone handles it.
  5. Do not chase the cycle counter. A phone is a tool; a battery is a consumable part with a known price.
  6. Replace the battery at around 80 % health rather than replacing the phone. It is the cheapest performance upgrade in consumer electronics.

The honest summary is that a lithium-ion battery is a component designed to wear out, and the manufacturers tell you roughly when. Good habits move the date by months, not years. Heat moves it by years — which is why "keep it cool" is worth more than every other rule on this page put together.
