Matter and Thread in 2026: what finally works, and what still doesn't
Four years after launch, Matter is no longer a promise — it is a specification with cameras, garage doors and electricity tariffs in it. The problem is that a logo on a box tells you what the standard can do, not what that product does.
Matter was sold to the public as the end of smart home fragmentation: one standard, every ecosystem, no more checking whether a bulb speaks to your voice assistant. That promise was always going to arrive gradually, because a standard only covers the device types it has defined — and in 2022 it defined lights, plugs, locks, blinds, thermostats and sensors, and nothing else.
The interesting question in 2026 is no longer "is Matter real". It is: which parts of it have made it out of the specification and into firmware you can buy?

The short answer
- Matter is the language; Thread is one of the roads it travels on. Matter also runs over Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
- Thread needs a border router. Many smart speakers, displays and newer Wi-Fi routers already contain one.
- Lights, plugs, sensors, locks and blinds work well. This is the mature core, and it is genuinely cross-ecosystem.
- Cameras only entered the specification in November 2025. Shipping products lag a specification by a year or more.
- "Works with Matter" is not a capability list. A device supports the device types its maker implemented, on the ecosystems that implemented them too.
Matter and Thread are not the same thing
This is the confusion that sells people the wrong hardware. Matter is an application layer — a shared vocabulary for what a device is and what it can be asked to do. Thread is a low-power wireless mesh network, built on IEEE 802.15.4, the same radio family as Zigbee.
A Matter device may reach your home network over Thread, over Wi-Fi, or over Ethernet. A mains-powered plug usually uses Wi-Fi, because power is free. A battery door sensor usually uses Thread, because Wi-Fi would drain it in weeks. Both are Matter devices; both appear identically in your app.
The border router, and why you may already own one
A Thread network cannot talk to the internet or to your phone on its own. It needs a border router: a device with a foot in both networks, translating between the Thread mesh and your ordinary IP network. You do not normally buy one as a separate box. Smart speakers, smart displays and an increasing number of Wi-Fi routers include one.
Matter 1.4, released in November 2024, formalised that last category. It defined Home Routers and Access Points — a certification for devices that are both a Wi-Fi access point and a Thread border router — and, more usefully, a secure directory for storing and sharing Thread network credentials. Before that, two border routers from different vendors could quite happily create two separate Thread networks in the same house, each invisible to the other. Credential sharing is what turns them into one mesh.
Check before you buy a Thread device
Ask what in your home is a border router. If the answer is nothing, the battery sensor you are about to buy will not connect to anything, and the box will not warn you.

What each release actually added
The Connectivity Standards Alliance ships a substantial Matter release roughly once or twice a year. The last three are the ones that changed what is possible.
Matter 1.4 was the energy release. Alongside the border-router work it added device types for solar inverters, home batteries, heat pumps, water heaters and improved EV charging, plus enhanced occupancy sensing and a low-power protocol that helps battery devices last longer. It also introduced enhanced multi-admin, which lets a device join several ecosystems with a single consent rather than a per-device dance.
Matter 1.5, published in November 2025, is the one people had been waiting for. Cameras are in the specification: live video and audio over WebRTC, two-way talk, pan-tilt-zoom, multiple stream configurations, and local or cloud storage — without a vendor-specific integration. It also unified closures, so window shades, drapes, awnings, gates and garage doors are described with the same building blocks; added soil moisture and temperature sensors for irrigation; introduced an electrical energy tariff device type that can carry real-time pricing and carbon intensity; and added full TCP transport for large data such as firmware updates.
Matter 1.5.1, from March 2026, is maintenance with teeth: multiple simultaneous camera streams at different qualities, HEIC snapshots, HLS and DASH upload support, pan-tilt-zoom fixes for cameras mounted at the edge of their rotation range, and stability work on doorbells, chimes and intercoms.
The gap between the spec and your hub
Here is where expectations break. Three separate things have to be true before a feature works in your house, and only the first is announced with a press release.

A Matter camera is the clearest example. The specification supports it today. Whether the camera on the shelf implements the Matter camera device type, and whether your chosen app shows its video rather than pushing you into the manufacturer's own app, are two more independent questions. Until all three line up, "Matter camera" on a box means less than it sounds.
The same caution applies in the other direction, though. The mature core — lights, plugs, switches, contact and motion sensors, thermostats, locks, blinds — has had years of implementation behind it and genuinely does work across ecosystems. That is not nothing: it is most of what a normal smart home is made of.
How to buy without regret
- Establish a border router first. Check what you own before buying any Thread device.
- Prefer Thread for anything battery-powered, Wi-Fi for anything plugged in. This one rule prevents most range and battery complaints.
- Read the device type, not the logo. "Works with Matter" plus a stated device type — Matter contact sensor, Matter door lock — is a real claim.
- Check your ecosystem's own support page for that device type before buying, not the manufacturer's.
- Assume the manufacturer app still exists. Firmware updates and advanced settings usually live there, Matter or not.
- Do not rebuild a working Zigbee or Z-Wave system out of enthusiasm. Bridges exist; a working system has value.
Is it worth rebuilding around?
If you are starting from nothing, yes — buying Matter-certified devices with Thread for battery kit is the lowest-regret path available, because it is the only one that does not lock your house to whichever voice assistant you happen to like this year.
If you already run a stable system, the honest answer is to add Matter at the edges. Replace things as they fail. The standard is finally moving quickly, which is good news, but it also means the version of it you would rebuild around today is not the version that will exist in two years — and a working smart home is worth more than a consistent one.
